5 Must See Places In the BVIs : Why You Need a Boat To See Them

In anticipation of our upcoming trip to the BVIs this Thanksgiving, I decided to put together a list of the 5 must see places in the BVIs.

I get this question a lot : “What are your top things to do in (fill in the blank) ?”

While I am certainly not an expert on every city and/or country, I can easily answer this question about the British Virgin Islands.

1- Soggy Dollar Bar at Jost Van Dyke

Do you want to know why the Soggy Dollar is named the ‘Soggy Dollar?’ Well, the only way to reach the Soggy Dollar is to swim there. Your dollars are most likely going to be a little soggy by the time you reach the Soggy Dollar bar.

The water in White Bay at the Soggy Dollar Bar is so crystal clear that you might be frightened it is to shallow to jump. I thought our boat captain was kidding when he said to jump, as I was sure the water was only a couple of feet deep. In reality, it is very deep and you will most likely not touch the bottom of White Bay.

Oh yeah, and you must have a pain killer while you are the Soggy Dollar. They even made our kids a virgin pain killer 🙂

If you are not smiling right now then something is wrong with you. Just sayin….

2-  Foxy Taboo Lunch and the Bubbly Pool

While you are already on Jost Van Dyke, take the boat over to Foxy Taboo’s for the best lunch on the island. This is not the main Foxy’s bar that you might have heard about. Foxy Taboo is owned by Foxy’s daughter, and it has a lunch menu that is to die for.

When you anchor up at Foxy Taboo, you may think that I have punked you. You are just going to have to trust me on this one. Foxy’s Taboo rocks. Try the homemade pizzas, lamb, and of course another painkiller!

After you finish lunch, ask for a map to the Bubby Pool. They will know what you are talking about. The hike can be treacherous, so pack some tennis shoes for the boat!

At the end of your hike, you will find one of the coolest phenomenons created by mother nature herself. If you are brave enough, you can get in the Bubbly Pool to wait for the Atlantic waves to come crashing in and take you for a spin! We all did it, and it is one of my kids favorite things to do in the BVIs

3- Foxy’s Bar

One cannot visit the BVIs without a trip to Foxy’s Bar on Jost Van Dyke! Foxy’s is famous for a lot of reasons.

Among them is the fact that Kenny Chesney frequents the joint, and even filmed one of his music videos there. The main reason Foxy’s Bar is famous, is Foxy himself. It is worth a visit to see if old man Foxy is hanging out that day. He is quite the jokster, and everyone will get a laugh out of him. I promise.

4- The Bath’s on Virgin Gorda

The Bath’s at Virgin Gorda are a must see place in the BVIs. The rock formations are stunning, and the kids will have a blast walking through them. Evelyn even did a science project on the Bath’s at Virgin Gorda after returning from our trip.

Unfortunately, the Virgin Gorda Bath’s science project did not work as an excuse for her absent school days. Hey, it was worth a try!

(Baths at Virgin Gorda Tip: Bring a water-proof camera)

5- The Norman Cave’s Snorkel Spot

Norman Island Cave Snorkeling

Who doesn’t have snorkeling a cave on their bucket list? Ok, maybe you didn’t, but you will now.

The Norman Cave’s is one of the coolest snorkeling experiences we’ve had to date. The cave is located on Norman Island, which is locally known as Treasure Island and said be the inspiration of the novel.

You can try to use this as an excuse for your kid’s missing school, but I’m just telling you that I struck out on this one too.

Anyway, the Norman Cave is a really neat place to snorkel because of how the water pushes you in and out of the cave.

Obviously, you will need a boat to visit these 5 must see places in the BVIs because they are all on water. Also, these places are located on different islands.

There are two ways of going about this, and one of them is to make the boat your vacation. One of the best kept vacation secrets is sailing on a private catamaran charter through the BVIs and it is on our bucket list.

Unfortunately, our 3 year old puts a kink in this bucket list trip so it will have to remain on the list for a few more years. Thus, we opt for the second method of island-hopping in the BVIs by renting a daily boat charter.
